5 out of 5 stars Roomba 530   June 13, 2010

After purchasing this robot a few weeks ago I have been very impressed with it's performance, its now been trialed in two different houses with complete satisfaction.

It has now been run about a 10 times and every time has cleaned well and successfully docked back at it's station located in other rooms, I did half expect to have to rescue it when the battery runs flat but this has not yet happened.

The machine will repeat its room cleaning cycles but that I think is a good thing, if it does miss a bit it will always find it later.

From my experience with it the battery life is round about 1.5 to 2 hours in duration but by then it has cleaned up several times.

No problems with it as yet but the sensors (IR) cannot see black objects like television stands and tends to run into these without slowing first, white masking tape on the base fixes this.

It does what it says on the box and pick is good for saying the vac motor is running from milliamps but I believe that is down to the construction and design of the machine. A rubber paddle picks up heavy bulky dirt and the vacuum follows behind picking up fine dust through a narrow orifice.

The bin is in two parts, the bulky dirt resides in the top half while the fine dust resides in the lower part seperated by a fine filter.

When the cleaning is complete the best way I have found is to clean it out with a second vac cleaner, care has to be taken not to damage the filter and the robot is ready to go again.

Well pleased with this machine, although it seems to bumble around a bit to find it's way round it does do a full cleaning job in the end. It goes under beds and furniture where normal vacuums cannot reach, it even appears to polish hard floors.

Highly recomended if your in the market for it.

4 out of 5 stars Roomba reliability?.   April 30, 2010

I live in a fairly large apartment all on one floor and whilst one cannot compare its performance with a powerful full size traditional vacuum cleaner it does a reasonable job for not too much effort on my part. However I am on my third Roomba which I will be taking back to the retailer in the next day or so as it won't work anymore. Same happened with the previous two. Rang Roomba to see if they could offer any advice, but received a recorded message that they were on holiday. Not impressed service wise, but pleased that I am still within warranty. I like the machine but could not give five stars because of the reliability issue.

5 out of 5 stars The wonder that is the iRobot Roomba   April 9, 2010

I didn't buy my iRobot Roomba 530 through Amazon but I felt that I would like to share my experience of this wonderful vacuum cleaner with anyone looking to purchase one through Amazon.

Prior to making my purchase I have to say that I was slightly sceptical but certainly hopeful that it would be a beneficial purchase. I can now report that there is no need to worry about whether or not this device can do a job of work for you. It can and will replace your existing vacuum cleaner for 99% of vacuum cleaning jobs. Empty the device regularly of all the dust, crumbs and other particles which find themselves on floors, clean the brushes, and make the charger unit available for the Roomba, and you will find that you have a wonderful assistant in your house.

When you go out give it a task - a room or two rooms or three rooms - choose a central point for the base unit - and the chances are that you will find the Roomba resting and charging when you come back. The floor will be clean of course where the Roomba could gain access. Every now and again be a bit more thorough by letting the Roomba access the points which are normally not accessible. In this way all areas will be cleaned.

Of course when you are doing other things about the house let Roomba work too. Every now and again shift an item so that Roomba can clean. Move a sofa, shift a chair, and lift the footstool onto a chair. Leave Roomba to work and then come back sometime later to move another chair........ The whole house can be cleaned with little work from the owner and a suitable strategy. It really does work. You will be amazed at how much grit, dirt and dust is lifted by Roomba on wooden floors and even on carpets.

If you want, just sit down and enjoy watching it work.

Your Roomba will also deserve to have a name - Sadie or Sid - Freda or Fred .........

It can and will make a difference. Without any reservation I can recommend the iRobot Roomba 530.

5 out of 5 stars A technological wonder!!!   March 17, 2010

We have had this for a couple of weeks now, and I can't begin to tell you how thrilled we are with it. First the reasons why we decided on the Irobot 530.

I have a severe house dust allergy. This may sound ridiculous, and it is, but the fact is, regular vacuum cleaners drive me into a fit of sneezing and cause my eyes to itch like the dickens and to bleed tears. This means that my wife usually has the joyous task of doing the vacuuming, see where this is going?? :)

My wife is nine months pregnant. See above :)

Our old-school vacuum finally met its maker.

So, we plunked down the money for this little marvel and the fact is, it wildly exceeds both our expectations.

I thought the little gal would never manage to navigate our apartment without getting stuck. We have lots of furniture, mostly Ikea, but oddly placed and not easy to navigate without moving it all around. At least with the old-school vacuum. We have Parquet throughout our apartment and it does a marvelous job of keeping it clean. For those of you who have a fully parqueted house, you already know you have to vacuum frequently because the dirt is so visible, unlike with carpets.

We just hit the green button on our way out the door in the morning and come back to a super clean floor every day. The thing always manages to find its way back to the docking station and only once did it not manage to redock itself (I had blocked it with a chair though).

This little wonder manages to get every bit of floor space spic and span. Some things to note though:

When you first use it, you will have to empty the dustbin perhaps after every room until you get the floor in good shape. After that, you can empty it every night when you get home.

Also, you really must check the brushes regularly, especially in the beginning to get the hairs and debris out of the cogs and the gears. This is as easy as kindergarten to do and should be done every night in the beginning.

I was concerned that my B&W floorstander speakers ($$$$$) would be damaged by this little guy. They are blemish free. Even at "full-speed", the little guy won't damage anything due to the bumper which is soft and spring-loaded.

There are spaces where it just won't reach, i.e. behind my entertainment center, so you will need a hand-held vac at least to get to those hard to reach places. We bought a little AEG hand-held and it is a perfect enhancement to this irobot. It comes out only for those spaces where the robot can't reach. These are not many though.

This is not a device where you say, "oh no! Company will be here in fifteen minutes, I need to vacuum up really quick!" In that respect, it won't fulfill your expectations. BUT, when you use it regularly, i.e. every other day or so, your floor will always be spotless. Always. You won't even think twice about inviting in unannounced guests.

We don't have any cables on the ground. But, it has never gotten stuck to date, and it is even nice to our very thin and hanging on the ground curtains. As I said, I was amazed that it could navigate the mine-field that is our furniture arrangement. It is so intelligent!

It is quiet enough that you can turn it on early in the morning and not annoy the neighobrs. I would say you could even run whilst your baby naps.

For those with allergies, like me, this thing does not affect me at all when it runs. Most vacuum cleaners force me to leave the room. This can run while I sit in the same room and my dust allergies do not kick in at all.

The time you save using this thing may be used up watching it! This is a time-save and a time-taker. It is so cool to watch how it goes about its business.

Overall, my wife and I are both thrilled with it and can't wait until they make robots which do laundry, iron, and do the washing up as well. This is so far worth every pound and really does a great job. We couldn't ask for more. Definite recommendation to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great robot, solution to clunking sound   February 23, 2010

I was so impressed I bought one for my Dad as well! The Roomba 530 picks up our pet hairs and pretty well does the whole house, except for the stairs, but makes up for that by going under the wardrobe, beds and sofa. However, it does need a thorough clean from time to time, and servicing is a pain as you have to send it to Germany. Mine started making a "clunk-clunk" sound, and complained that its brushes needed cleaning even though they were cleaned. I solved this by taking out the brush compartment, and unscrewing the side panel to reveal the cogs connecting the brushes to the electric motor. These cogs were gummed up with hair and fluff, but once cleaned, the Roomba 530 works like a treat again. Also I have had to replace the battery. This is why I give it four instead of five stars.
