2 out of 5 stars Can't recommend this phone unfortunately   August 16, 2010
Nothing Works!

This little phone has a surprisingly high spec (WiFi, 3G, A-GPS and Exchange mail support etc) looks good and has a very reasonable price point so, when my wife needed a new phone, I thought I'd give this a go. Two of the main reasons were the Exchange support and the GPS capability. However I can't get the Exchange aspects working at all, despite trying every combination of setting possible. Of course neither Samsung nor Vodafone were any help, and tried either to point the finger at each other or to suggest that maybe the phone needed an additional security certificate for Exchange. I'm highly dubious about this as the OWA mail server I'm trying to connect to has been easily accessible from at least 4 other handsets (Android, WinMO and Symbian) in the last 9 months using exactly the same server credentials, so either Samsung are not telling it like it is or this is yet another example of the toxic effects of Vodafore branding software. In any event Exchange support is NOT available. Also when I attemped to access Telnet to use the Vodafone Find & Go satnav software I got a 'model not recognised' error and that was that. So I have no Exchange mail and no satnav (and when I added some contacts to the 'People' widget they worked fine for an hour and then disappeared - not only from the widget screen but from the phone completely! Such a pity because this could be such a good device but Samsung have moved on and neither they nor Vodafone could care less. Sadly, this is definitely one to avoid.

No major problems with the phone. I'm not very demanding, mainly using the phone for calls, texting and some photos which it performs quite satisfactorily. So, so far so good, all except Samsung support. There were a few little things I didn't understand or couldn't do - manual not very good and web site didn't address the particular difficulties. In the end I had to phone the foreign support call centre. Not only experienced the usual mammoth delays and difficulties in commumication but no-one appeared to be familiar with the phone or able to help me. In the end I figured it out for myself - most frustrating.

4 out of 5 stars Samsung Genio Slide B5310   August 10, 2010

I've had this phone for over a week now and I am very pleased with it. For the money it is a very functionally rich phone. The touch screen is good, as is the keypad. Even if you have large fingers you should be able to type on the keypad OK. Other phones I've tried where the keypad is on the front of the phone, the keys are just too small, but the Genio Slide keypad is very good. The WIFI ability is brilliant, you can access the internet/email etc free of charge (unlike access with GPRS if you have a PAYG phone). OK, it can be a bit slow depending on what web sites you are looking at, but the good old BBC have some good WAP enabled websites which are quick to load so you can get all the news/weather etc without a problem. You can also access the BBC iPlayer site which works well on this phone, and the picture quality is very acceptable with good sound. The FM radio works well and is very clear. The phone plays MP4 video without a problem. It has some nice useful 'widgets' and apps, including Facebook, Twitter. I found my email easy to setup, so I can access my Virgin.net emails where ever I can get a WIFI connection.

Only one niggle with this phone. It has the Palringo Instant Messaging application, which works OK, but I can only get it to connect to the internet using GPRS and not WIFI. I can't for the life of me see how I can change a setting so that it uses the WIFI connection. It's not a big issue though as I don't know anyone else who's got it! You can download the ebuddy application (which is installed in the 'Games and More' part of the menu) and you can access MSN Messenger no problem - you have to create an ebuddy account first, then you can login to MSN.

All in all a very good phone. You may need to spend a bit of time getting used to the phone and how it works, but once you've sussed everything out, it's a great phone for a great price.

2 out of 5 stars Good looking phone   August 7, 2010

I have mixed feelings about this phone and am still learning what it can offer (I bought it in August 2010). It's a good looking phone and feels good in the hand, even when it slides open.I bought it for the slide out querty board, which makes texting so much easier (although I realise that people who have to wear reading glasses might find the small keys difficult to handle.) The touch screen lets the phone down in my opinion. For example, when I use the phonebook, it often takes several attempts before I get the actual number I wanted - when scrolling, it has the tendency to open the person you put your finger on to scroll it down. I enjoy using this feature on my itouch and I don't seem to experience this problem, on the Samsung I end up using the search facility. My biggest complaint about this phone is the widget side bar, it is incredibly difficult to scroll down and like the phonebook, where ever you place your finger, that's what it opens. Since all the widgets are in the menu, the phone would be better with out this facility (If any one knows how to disable this, please let me know!) I have one other minor quibble, which think is just specific to me - I keep the phone in one of my trouser side pockets, when ever I take it out it slides open and catches on other things which makes it difficult to take out and use.

One thing I want to add about this phone. When you are conected to the internet you can load iplayer and then download them to the phone to be watch later. You can watch them without INTERNET. Something most phones cannot do. Superb phone.
Must buy.
