Excellent - does exactly what I wanted July 27, 2010 CD_ClearanceSale My objective was simple, to create a digital movie collection that is available around the house on a wired network. The wired network has been achieved using the Devolo dLAN 200 AV Easy HomePlug - we now have 6 of these connected in the Study (to the Router), Living Room (Nintendo Wii), Master Bedroom (XBox 360 Elite), Our son's bedroom (connected to a WD TV Live HD Media Player) and we're soon to add our daughter's bedroom (with another WD TV Live HD Media Player). The HomePlug's are excellent, fast (200mbps) and very reliable.
We copy our DVD 'master copies' using the Magic DVD Ripper software and create DVD quality MPEG2 files with AC3 (Dolby Digital) surround sound. These files are all stored on a WD World Edition 2TB Network Hard Drive.
In our son's room he can now select any of his favourite movies without the need to handle a disc. The movie is accessed within seconds using a perfectly logical menu system which, even at 5 years old, he can operate easily. The WD Network Hard Drive we use has a Twonky media server built-in which works well with the WD TV Live HD Media Player and prior to upgrading the hard drive the Media Player worked perfectly with the media server built in to Windows Media Player 11 on our Windows Vista computer.
Ultimately, with a little bit of tweaking and adjusting (as you expect with most new technology), this product has been brilliant and definitely worthy of 5 stars. You can't guarantee that there won't be odd faulty devices shipped from time-time - Western Digital aren't the only ones guilty of this - but in terms of functionality it's been so good that we have another one on order for our daughter's bedroom.
There's even some icing on the cake in the form of YouTube account access. This allows you to access your YouTube account and watch videos saved in your 'Favourites' - all the more impressive given the growing number of HD videos on YouTube. One slight annoyance here though is with YouTube as many videos are not permitted for viewing on 'TV connected devices' - nothing WD can do about that though!
Cracking Bit Of Kit July 26, 2010 Tony C Cracking Bit Of Kit, would recommend , really easy to use and seems to play all formats no problem .
Excellent product. July 20, 2010 A. Moledina (London) Now why didn't I think of this before? This is an excellent product and simply a breeze to set up. Plays multiple format with ease. I have tried both USB and wifi streaming and it's absolutely brilliant and dead easy. For wireless streaming instead of going thru the hassle of a Wireless Key Adapter I simply opted for homeplugs, which was a very wise decision. It recognized all my shared files instantly and the picture and sound quality is superb. HD movies play flawlessly. The home plugs are connected to my extension leads rather than the wall socket as suggested by the product vendor - even then it recognised everything without a hitch.
Not great July 19, 2010 Matthew Whitehouse (UK) Purchased this as a replacement for an Apple TV that is faulty. The plan was to stream from computer to device to watch movies and photos. However with HD movies the playback can't stream quick enough and compared to the Apple TV the interface is disapointing. I've decided to go back to the Apple TV and live with the fact that it keeps losing the link to iTunes - a common problem.
Great product! July 18, 2010 Darren Just awesome device! Have played all my video files (Avi, Mpg, Mkv etc.) without absolutely no problem. Good HD picture quality with excellent surround sound (AC3 & DTS). So I can truly recommend this player!!
